The phrases “behavioral health” and “mental health” refer to a broad range of problems that can significantly affect a person’s quality of life. Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), and conduct disorder are a few mental health and behavioral health conditions that frequently manifest throughout childhood or adolescence. Depressive disorders, eating disorders, anxiety disorders, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are examples of mental and behavioral health conditions that may also manifest earlier in life, but their symptoms frequently appear in adulthood as well. Bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, and borderline personality disorder are among the conditions that usually manifest in adulthood.
The extent to which mental health and behavioral health issues can impact people and their families is very hard to articulate. All populations, regardless of age, financial class, or origin, are impacted by mental and behavioral health illnesses. A person’s age at the onset of their symptoms, the presence of co-occurring disorders, the duration of their symptoms prior to beginning treatment, and their use of drugs or alcohol can all have a significant impact on the extent and severity of these disorders. Distressing symptoms can be lessened, the frequency of symptoms may be decreased, and people will learn how to manage symptoms in their everyday life when they receive treatment for mental or behavioral health illnesses.
At PTC, we understand the impact that mental and behavioral health illnesses have, and we are knowledgeable about the different kinds and intensities of treatment that have been shown to work best.
