The domestic violence treatment option is an alternative court process which allows people who have used violence against a spouse to take responsibility for their behavior and receive support and counseling. The program is a response to the traditional justice process' inability to meaningfully reduce incidences of domestic violence through punitive measures and provides opportunities for therapy and counseling that can reduce the risk of re-offending.
The Domestic Violence Treatment provides comprehensive treatment to adult offenders of domestic violence and intimate partner violence. Services are available to adults (18+) who have been charged, convicted, or engaged in domestic violence. Services are designed to increase victim and community safety by reducing offender risk of repetition.
Our staff work collaboratively with a Multi-Disciplinary Treatment Team (MTT) which includes, victim advocates, local law enforcement, probation officers, the prosecutor’s office, and court systems. The Multi-Disciplinary Treatment Team will oversee decisions on initial treatment level placements, changes in levels, and decisions about discharge for each participant.
The proposed treatment and strategies are based on the Duluth Treatment Model, a psycho-educational approach focusing on perpetrator accountability, victim safety, and community coordination (Coordinated Community Response – CCR).
Treatment is based on the level of risks measured by the Domestic Violence Risk & Needs Assessment Tool; used to assign domestic violence offenders to treatment intensity levels at intake and throughout the decision-making process regarding treatment options. It treats domestic violence as a pattern of coercive control, utilizing group sessions, such as the 16-week Domestic Violence Intervention Program (DVIPP).
